OBLIQUE STRATEGIES FOR SALE SERIES
Lotta Pick & Ashkan Sahihi, Berlin and New York, July 19th, 2021 'Oblique Strategies', 1996, from the Peter Norton Family Christmas Project series, set of printed cards inspired by Eno's 1975 series of phrases, each card with a single phrase in each of the six most commonly spoken languages, all housed in a Corian white box known as 'Bill's Bad Bone', in the original shipping container. This is our natural fundament and approach in gathering the art and artists for our humble contribution to Direkte Auktion II.
We both work in the field exclusively and currently live in Berlin. What they, what we, have in common is the love for Berlin and the arts. Ashkan Sahihi was born in the 1960s and raised in Tehran, Frankfurt and New York. Lotta Pick is half Swedish and half German. Subtitled Over One Hundred Worthwhile Dilemmas the cards hold short, cryptic suggestions, statements or observations and should be drawn from the deck at random to break an impasse in. We believe art has always and will always help narrate history, even if it does not use the spoken or written word, and that this is a powerful moment to gather a collective narrative. The original Oblique Strategies are a deck of cards devised by Peter Schmidt and Brian Eno in 1975 as part of their own creative practices and collaboration.
Referring to Oblique Strategies, a card game first issued in 1975 that intended to help artists break creative blocks by issuing challenging constraints, our humble hope was to gather exceptional work created by exceedingly talented artists who, like all thinking, feeling beings, were handed the most unexpected and unknown of cards: a global pandemic. The narrative of the selection is on the one hand anchored in the iconic and mystified days of the divided and occupied City of Berlin and, on the other hand, represents the vibrant and promising art scene of the capital today. With a hefty nod of respect and appreciation to Brian Eno and Peter Schmidt, my esteemed co-curator Lotta Pick, of Open White Gallery, and myself have gathered works of 18 artists under the title Oblique Strategies.
